Portrait of Kensi Gounden

Kensi Gounden has practised law in British Columbia for more than three decades. His work has ranged from representing people in court to providing advice, negotiating solutions, and helping other lawyers with difficult files.

He knows the legal system professionally. He also knows what it is like when life takes a bad turn. He has been through divorce, a serious professional setback, and other difficult periods of his own. Those experiences changed how he sees the people who come to lawyers for help.

Kensi helps people understand where they stand, make good decisions, and get through difficult periods without letting the legal problem take over the rest of their lives.

He believes clients should have more control over how they use a lawyer. Some want a lawyer to handle everything. Others need an hour of advice, help dealing with the other side, a second opinion, a document reviewed, or someone to work out what to do next. They should be able to choose.

Kensi has spent much of his career connected to the communities around him. He has worked alongside other lawyers, advocates, and community organizations, shared what he has learned, and helped other lawyers work through difficult cases. That interest has taken him well beyond British Columbia, including experiences with legal organizations in Tanzania, China, Vietnam, and India.

Vancouver has been home for more than 35 years. Outside law, Kensi runs, travels, reads, and takes food seriously. The running output helps with the food intake.

After more than three decades in law, and a few hard chapters of his own, Kensi knows that people usually come to a lawyer because something in their life has gone wrong. The job is to help them find a way through it.
